Afghan Gazak Handwoven Wool Kilim
A bold and graphic handwoven wool kilim in the Afghan Gazak tradition, carefully curated by RojKilim. Measuring 156 × 200 cm (5.1 × 6.6 ft), this striking piece combines three distinct weaving techniques — kilim, sumak, and hali — to create an all-over diamond lattice pattern rendered in rich red and deep indigo-blue. The interplay of flat-weave, wrapped-weft, and knotted-pile methods produces a surface of extraordinary textural depth. Every rug is individually selected for its quality, authenticity, and enduring beauty.
Weaving Tradition
The Gazak kilim originates from the Pashtun and Baluch weaving communities of Afghanistan. These textiles combine three traditional techniques within a single composition: the kilim (flat-weave) creates smooth lightweight grounds, the sumak (wrapped-weft) builds raised ribbed surfaces with exceptional durability, and the hali (knotted pile) introduces soft velvety medallions. The diamond lattice — known locally as the "eye of the peacock" or "almond" motif — is among the most ancient geometric patterns in Central Asian weaving, symbolizing watchfulness and protection. The red and indigo palette draws from traditional natural dye sources.
Craftsmanship
Every Gazak kilim is handwoven on a traditional ground loom using all three weaving techniques. The tight, even weave creates a durable textile with remarkable textural variety. The concentric diamond lattice radiates outward from the center, framed by multiple narrow borders featuring smaller geometric motifs. The composition demonstrates exceptional planning and precision, as the weaver must hold the entire design in memory throughout the weaving process. Natural cream-colored wool fringe completes the traditional presentation. Because each kilim is woven entirely by hand, slight variations in color and pattern are natural characteristics that make every piece unique.
