Afghan Khal Mohammadi Handwoven Wool Rug
A richly saturated handwoven wool rug in the iconic Khal Mohammadi tradition, carefully curated by RojKilim. Measuring 156 × 200 cm (5.1 × 6.6 ft), this piece combines three distinct weaving techniques — kilim, sumak, and hali — featuring a deep crimson field adorned with classic geometric gül medallions in navy, black, and cream. The multi-technique construction creates extraordinary textural depth across the surface. Every rug is individually selected for its quality, authenticity, and enduring beauty.
Weaving Tradition
The Khal Mohammadi is one of the most recognized rug styles originating from Afghanistan. Named after a prominent rug trading family, these pieces are handwoven by skilled weavers using three techniques within a single composition: kilim (flat-weave) for smooth grounds, sumak (wrapped-weft) for raised textured borders, and hali (knotted pile) for the dense velvety medallion field. The distinctive deep red coloring is achieved through multiple rounds of traditional dyeing processes. The repeating geometric gül motifs trace their lineage to ancient Turkmen tribal symbols.
Craftsmanship
Every Khal Mohammadi rug is handwoven using all three traditional techniques on a wool foundation. The combination of flat-weave, wrapped-weft, and knotted pile creates a surface of remarkable variety — smooth kilim areas transition into the ribbed texture of sumak work and the soft pile of knotted medallions. The geometric medallion motifs are precisely rendered across the field, framed by ornate running-dog and diamond borders. Natural wool fringe with decorative wrapped tassels completes the traditional presentation. Because each rug is woven entirely by hand, slight variations in color, weave, and pattern are natural characteristics that make every piece unique.
