About Our Kilims

Each kilim in our collection is handwoven by master weavers in Eastern Turkey and the highlands of northern Kurdistan — a region with an unbroken weaving tradition stretching back centuries. Rooted in Kurdish and Anatolian heritage, these flatweaves are more than floor coverings; they are living records of the communities, symbols, and stories passed down through generations of women weavers.

We source every piece directly from the Van/Wan region, selecting only rugs made from hand-spun natural wool and colored with plant-based and mineral dyes. The result is a palette of warm, earthy tones — madder reds, indigo blues, saffron yellows — that deepens and softens beautifully with age.

No two kilims are alike. Each one carries the distinct hand of its maker: slight irregularities in the weave, variations in color, and geometric motifs unique to a specific village or family lineage. These are the marks of authenticity.

Our Sourcing Story

RojKilim was founded on a simple conviction: the most beautiful rugs in the world come from the highlands of Eastern Turkey and northern Kurdistan, and they deserve to be seen.

We source our collection primarily from the Wan (Van) region — a high-altitude plateau in eastern Anatolia with a weaving culture that predates written records. This area sits at the crossroads of Kurdish, Armenian, Turkish, and broader Anatolian traditions, and its textiles reflect that layered history.

Every kilim we carry is made from natural wool and colored with plant-based or mineral dyes: madder root for reds, indigo for blues, pomegranate rind for warm yellows and tans. These dyes bond deeply with wool fibers and age gracefully over time.

Why Choose a Handwoven Kilim?

Kilims are flatwoven rugs — crafted without the knotted pile of traditional carpets — making them lighter, more flexible, and remarkably versatile. Unlike pile rugs, kilims lie flat and travel well, adapting easily to living rooms, bedrooms, entryways, dining spaces, and layered interior arrangements. Their low profile makes them ideal for high-traffic areas without sacrificing beauty or character.

What sets a handwoven kilim apart is its singularity. Every piece is made by hand on a loom, often by a single weaver or a small family workshop. The geometric motifs — diamonds, hooks, stars, stepped borders — are a visual language, encoding meaning, identity, and memory into the textile itself.

Wool kilims are among the most durable floor coverings available. Natural wool fibers resist dirt, regulate humidity, and soften gracefully with use. A well-made kilim does not wear out — it wears in, developing a patina that only deepens its character over time.

At RojKilim, every piece is personally selected for quality of weave, integrity of materials, and authenticity of origin. We do not carry reproductions or machine-made imitations.
